About the product
What is the BarxBuddy ultrasonic trainer?
Is the BarxBuddy ultrasonic dog training device safe for my dog?
Safe, humane, effective, easy to use — all of the above. Yes.
We do not recommend using the BarxBuddy ultrasonic training device on dogs younger than 6 months for two reasons. First, the high-frequency sound might scare the puppy. Second, puppies have very short attention spans, so they may not be effective. Around 6 months of age, dogs start to become trainable.
The BarxBuddy ultrasonic training tool uses high-frequency ultrasonic sounds to distract a dog from barking or doing unwanted behaviors. It is a training tool, not a magic wand. It works best with our signature train, treat, repeat method of dog training.
Great question. The light switch has three positions. Slide it forward to use the device solely as a flashlight (handy feature, right?). Slide it to the “I” position to use the flashlight with the ultrasonic trainer. When you press the ON button, your dog will hear the high-frequency sound and see the light. This is an ideal setting for training your dog. Slide it to the “II” position to use the infrared light. When you press the ON button you will see a red light, which is ideal for distracting aggressive barking dogs and dogs that don’t belong to you. Use it when you’re at home in your yard and bothered by a neighbor’s barking dog, or take it on walks to distract dogs that bark at you as you enjoy a stroll.
We need to be straight with you: People hurt dogs; tools don’t hurt dogs. And when people misuse training tools, that can harm dogs. The BarxBuddy ultrasonic training device is safe, harmless and foolproof when used as instructed. The high frequency sound won’t hurt your dog, but it will get their attention so you can correct unwanted behaviors.
No. We would never recommend a product that would harm your animals or that we wouldn’t use on our own pets.
The BarxBuddy trainer is a hand-held device that doesn’t come in contact with your dog. There is no collar or wearable device required.
Our ultrasonic trainer is different from other training devices because it (a) requires no collar, (b) it is safe and doesn’t shock or hurt your dog, (c) it works on all sizes, breeds and ages of dogs, and (d) anyone can use it.
It is used as a training tool for distracting dogs when they are doing unwanted behaviors, such as barking and jumping, so you can correct their behaviors and reward them with treats when they do good things. See how it works.
No! The BarxBuddy ultrasonic trainer is safe to use on and around all of your pets.
This is a tricky question to answer because cats are not as easy to train as dogs. A team of researchers in Australia tested ultrasonic training devices on stray cats that were destroying or interfering with urban gardens, according to an article in ScienceDirect. The researchers found that the frequency of trespassing cats was reduced by nearly half (46%) and the amount of time that the cats spent in the gardens was significantly reduced (by 78%). The researchers said the ultrasonic training devices were humane, inexpensive and easy to use as an effective way to reduce cat intruders in community gardens. So, yes, they can work on neighborhood cats.
The BarxBuddy ultrasonic trainer is a perfect tool to stop dog barking indoors and to control barking outdoors. We recommend that you keep one outside for training while playing in the yard, and keep another indoors so it’s always within reach.
The range is currently 12 to 18 meters (about 40 to 60 feet).
This is another tricky question to answer. Yes, it works through walls, but — and we can’t emphasize this enough — it’s not quite intended to be used that way. It’s not a point-and-click remote control that magically stops barking. It will distract your dog, but if you don’t issue a command, the dog won’t put two and two together. It’s a training tool, which means it’s best used with our train, treat, repeat method of dog training.
We get this question a lot. A customer has an annoying neighbor dog that won’t stop barking, and they want a humane but effective way to stop it. Yes, you can use the BarxBuddy ultrasonic training device to distract any barking dog. However, without proper train-treat-repeat training, it may not be a good long-term solution. Check out our guide on what to do if your neighbor’s dog won’t stop barking.

Ultrasonic Training Device Troubleshooting
Why won’t my ultrasonic training tool work?
Make sure you install the 9-volt battery properly. Did you open the battery compartment and remove the protective wrap that came with the battery? Did you snap the battery to the connector?
How do I know if it is working properly?
