We here at BarxBuddy, love celebrating our dogs every day. We’ve put together a list of pet holidays that support having doggy festivities all year long. Don’t forget to throw a bash for your pet’s birthday as well because after all, they’re only here for a short time. Make every day count! Here’s what you and your furry BFF can look forward to in 2022!

January 2022 Pet Holidays

  • National Train Your Dog Month
  • Walk Your Pet Month

Jan. 14: National Dress Up Your Pet Day — Dress your pet day was popularized by Animal Behaviorist Colleen Paige; it’s a social media opportunity to show your pet’s strut. #DressUpYourPetDay

Jan. 22: National Answer Your Cat’s Question Day — Here’s your chance to see things from your cat’s point of view. Pay attention to your cat and try to understand their movements, motives, and attitudes.

Jan. 24: Change a Pet’s Life Day — This is the day to recognize the hard work of the staff and volunteers at your local animal shelters. It also encourages people to adopt a pet.

Jan. 29: Seeing-Eye Guide Dog Anniversary — Did you know that Seeing Eye Dogs got their start in the US in New York city in 1928? See the history of Seeing Eye Dogs.

February 2022 Pet Holidays

  • Responsible Pet Owners Month
  • Spay/Neuter Awareness Month

Feb. 7-13: Have a Heart for a Chained Dog Week (second week in February) — Founded by the DDB (Dogs Deserve Better), this week near Valentine’s Day is all about raising awareness for animal abuse and opening our hearts.

Feb. 14: Pet Theft Awareness Day — This holiday calls attention to the importance of pet identification.

Feb. 15-16: Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show — Dog owners and dogs put on their best performances during this elite competition.

Feb. 20: Love Your Pet Day — Take time out to show your furry friend some serious love and affection!

Feb. 22: Walking the Dog Day — Joint health and combating obesity are just two of the many reasons why you and your pet should walk as often as you can.

Feb. 25: World Spay Day — This holiday encourages pet owners to save animal lives by spaying and neutering dogs and feral cats.

March 2022 Pet Holidays

  • Poison Prevention Awareness Month

March 6: Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race — This race is nearly 1,000 miles (1,609.34 km) long over mountains and inhospitable tundra, and is a striking testament to the dog’s strength and work ethic.

March 7-13: Professional Pet Sitters Week (first full week in March) — The week recognizes professional pet sitters for all they do for our furry friends.

March 13: K9 Veterans Day — Honors the contributions that dogs have made to our armed services.

March 23: National Puppy Day — Time to celebrate the affection and unconditional love puppies bring to our lives. Today is meant to bring awareness of puppy mills and that pups in shelters need loving, caring homes.

April 2022 Pet Holidays

  • National Pet First Aid Awareness Month (How to Create a First-Aid Kit for Dogs)
  • National Heartworm Awareness Month
  • Prevent Lyme Disease in Dogs Month

April 1-7: International Pooper Scooper Week (first week in April) — This week educates pet owners on the importance of scooping the poop (cleaning up after their dogs).

April 8: National Dog Fighting Awareness Day — Established by the ASPCA, this holiday is all about raising awareness of dogfighting and encouraging animal lovers to act against this form of animal cruelty.

April 11: National Pet Day — Today is an opportunity to help out orphaned pets.

April 18-24: Animal Cruelty/Human Violence Awareness Week (third week in April) — It’s time to acknowledge the connection between animal abuse and violence against people.

April 18-24: National Pet ID Week (third week in April) — Time to update your pet’s identification.

April 24: World Veterinary Day (last Saturday in April) — The World Veterinary Day celebrates the extraordinary efforts made by so many Veterinarians each day.

April 30: Adopt a Shelter Pet Day — Today is to raise the awareness of shelter and rescue pets.

April 30: National Therapy Animal Day — According to the Alliance of Therapy Dogs, the use of animals in emotional support roles was documented as far back as ancient Greece.

May 2022 Pet Holidays

May 1: National Purebred Dog Day — Let’s celebrate all the ways purebred dogs better our lives.

May 1: Mayday for Mutts (first Sunday in May) — Established in 1915 by the American Humane Association, this day reminds humans it’s not the pedigree that makes a good dog, but its personality.

May 1-7 National Pet Week (first full week of the month): — The AVMA says it created this holiday week in 1981, but we see evidence that it existed well before then. Whatever the origins, this is the week when pet lovers and pet organizations celebrate the bond between our pets and us.

May 3-9: Puppy Mill Action Week (Monday before Mother’s Day) — Help stop puppy mills and save lives by contacting your local representatives, supporting local animal shelters, or adopting a puppy mill survivor.

May 14: National Animal Disaster Preparedness Day (second Saturday in May) — The ASPCA has a Disaster Preparedness Checklist to help you include your furry family member into the readiness plan.

May 20: National Rescue Dog Day — Today brings awareness about the countless number of amazing dogs in shelters looking for their “forever” homes.

June 2022 Pet Holidays

June 4: Hug Your Cat Day — We all know how regal and poised cats are, today is a great day to show them just how much you love them.

June 5-11: Pet Appreciation Week (first full week in June) — This week celebrates the pets in our lives and encourages responsible pet care every day.

June 8: Best Friends Day — Fredrick The Great of Persia is credited with first uttering the phrase “Man’s Best Friend.” Which makes this the perfect day for you to spoil your dog.

June 14: World Pet Memorial Day (second Tuesday in June) — Pets are only in our lives for a short time. Today is an opportunity to memorialize your lost beloved pets.

June 24: Take Your Dog to Work Day (Friday after Father’s Day) — Employees across the country take their pets to work as a way to celebrate the companionship between humans and canines.

June 24: Cat World Domination Day — Isn’t this every day? Most cat owners would say yes. Today is for the rest of us to recognize the fabulousness of felines.

July 2022 Pet Holidays

  • National Lost Pet Prevention Month
  • National Pet Hydration Awareness Month (Get a portable water bowl when you’re on the go)

July 11: All-American Pet Photo Day — Take and share some of your favorite pet photos. #PetPhotoDay #AllAmericanPetPhotoDay

July 15: National Pet Fire Safety Day — Don’t forget to include your pets when planning fire routes and how to keep your pet set safe.

July 17-23: National Feed a Rescue Pet Week (third week in July) — A fundraising effort by the Greater Good Charities Rescue Bank to provide meals for shelter and rescue pets across the nation.

July 31: National Mutt Day — Time to embrace and adopt mixed breeds.

August 2022 Pet Holidays

  • National Immunization Awareness Month

Aug. 1-7: International Assistance Dog Week (first week in August) — This week is to recognize and honor all the hard-working, devoted assistance dogs.

Aug. 15: National Check the Chip Day — Take today to make sure the contact information on your pet’s microchip is correct.

Aug. 21: International Homeless Animals Day — Started by the International Society for Animal Rights in 1992, this holiday focuses on the plight of pet overpopulation that affects communities around the world. Encourages people to spay or neuter their pets.

Aug. 26: National Dog Day — Encourages dog ownership of all breeds, purebred and mixed.

September 2022 Pet Holidays

  • National Service Dog Month
  • Responsible Dog Ownership Month

Sept. 8: National Dog Walker Appreciation Day — Take a moment to thank your dog walker.

Sept. 18: Puppy Mill Awareness Day (third Saturday in September) — This holiday is dedicated to improving the lives of dogs. It encourages people who are interested in welcoming a new dog into their lives to adopt, not shop.

Sept. 19-25: National Deaf Dog Awareness Week (last full week in September) — The week highlights these special loyal companions and raises awareness of the prevalence of deafness in dogs. According to Louisiana State University, congenital deafness has been recognized in more than 100 dog breeds including Samoyed, greyhound, dalmatian, and bulldog.

Sept. 23: Remember Me Thursday (fourth Thursday) — This is a social media day intended to raise awareness for adoptable pets and those who didn’t get a second chance. Share a snapshot of your rescue pet #RememberMeThursday

Sept. 28: World Rabies Day — This holiday raises awareness about rabies and the importance of getting pets vaccinated.

October 2022 Pet Holidays

  • Adopt a Shelter Dog Month
  • National Animal Safety and Protection Month
  • National Pit Bull Awareness Month

Oct. 1: National Fire Pup Day — This day recognizes all the canine firefighters across the country.

Oct. 1-7: National Walk Your Dog Week (first week in October) — This week is dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of exercise and the health of your dog, yourself and your family.

Oct. 13: National Pet Obesity Awareness Day — On this day the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention conducts a Pet Nutrition & Weight Management survey of pet owners and veterinary professionals.

Oct. 26: National Pit Bull Awareness Day — This is an effort to raise positive attention, communications and experiences surrounding the American pit bull terrier.

November 2022 Pet Holidays

  • National Senior Pet Month
  • Adopt a Senior Pet Month
  • Pet Cancer Awareness Month
  • Pet Diabetes Month

Nov. 1: National Cook for Your Pets Day — Take some time and cook something for your beloved companions. We have four recipes for healthy dog treats.

Nov. 7: National Canine Lymphoma Awareness Day — Started by Terry Simons, a dog agility trainer and competitor after he lost his dog Reville to lymphoma in 2011, this holiday educates and creates awareness about canine lymphoma, early detection and prevention.

Nov. 6-12: National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week (first full week in November) — This week recognizes shelters for providing care and helping people adopt abandoned and stray animals.

Nov. 24: National Dog Show (always airs on Thanksgiving Day) — A dog competition that highlights dogs of all breeds and varieties.

December 2021 Pet Holidays

  • National Cat Lovers’ Month

Dec. 9: International Veterinary Medicine Day — Today recognizes those who help keep our furry friends healthy and safe.

Dec. 16: Underdog Day (third Friday in December) — For those of us who are old enough to remember the cartoon, this is not about that; it’s about those pets who have rallied back against the odds to win their own personal battles. Share your pet’s win with #Underdog.
