Need some help with training your dog but can’t drive to your local training class every week? Or, maybe your pet doesn’t do well with car rides and being around other dogs. Whatever your limitation, more companies are offering dog training online, especially since COVID-19 restricted many people to home-based activities.

There are many advantages to virtual dog training. When your dog is in its natural environment without the distractions of other dogs and people, training becomes easier. On the other hand, if you’re trying to socialize your dog, you’ll need to find other ways to do that in the real world.

If you’re new to virtual dog training classes, you’ll be surprised to find a world of choices in content, format, and pricing (some are free).

What Should You Look For in Online Dog Training Classes?

When searching for the best dog training online, pay attention to the training subject — puppy development, agility training, tracking, obedience, nose work, to name a few. Training sessions are not one-size-fits-all.

  • Are the training sessions live or recorded?
  • If the classes are live, how many people are admitted per class?
  • What time zone is it in?
  • How long is the program?
  • What language is the instruction?
  • And, of course, how much does it cost? Not only do you want to know how much the virtual dog training class costs, but you also want to be clear on what you get for the fee. Read customer reviews. Make sure you aren’t signing up for one thing and then find that you will be asked to pay add-on fees for “upsells.”

Online Dog Training Class Reviews

We have included some brand-name virtual dog training options below, but we don’t endorse one trainer over any other. We encourage you to look at online reviews of the online dog training options and talk to your friends, family and veterinary staff for recommendations. The list below is shared to give you an example of what you might find as you explore options.

Of course, we are big advocates of using our own Train, Treat, Repeat dog training method, which combines the hand-held ultrasonic trainer with voice commands and positive reinforcement. Learn more about Train, Treat, Repeat.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Online Dog Training

Whether you choose to take live online dog training classes or a free program, you must keep a few things in mind when training your pet.

  • Be consistent. Consistency is key to successful training. Hold yourself accountable for following through with each training step every time you work with your pet.
  • Keep calm. Even with online training, you might get frustrated with your pet. Dogs can read human emotions quite well. And if your pet senses you’re tense and stressed out, your training will fail.
  • Practice patience. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither will your dog’s behavior change happen overnight.
  • Supplement your training. Use your training tools like the BarxBuddy in tandem with your classes. Whenever your pet is displaying undesired behavior or is distracted and not responding to your commands, press the button on the BarxBuddy device to get your dog’s attention and provide him or her with a verbal cue.
  • Train, treat, repeat. Always reward your dog with either treats, praise, or life reward. This positive reinforcement ensures your dog will continue to display good behavior.

You’re always training. Just because the online dog training course ended doesn’t mean your training does. Keep working with your dog!
